On Friday the 10th of August 2018 the NECA Victoria Excellence Awards were held at the Crown Palladium, Melbourne. Nilsen VIC won not one but two awards on the night - Best Commercial Medium Project for NEXTDC M2 - Stage 1 and Best Commercial Large Project for the Austin Hospital HV and Generation Project.

Category 7 - Commercial Medium - NEXTDC M2 - Stage 1

Despite significant construction challenges, working closely with NEXTDC the Nilsen team met the original completion date for stage 1 of M2 and achieved Tier IV certification. NEXTDC was thus able to keep commitments to shareholders and clients.

Highly sophisticated technology was successfully installed in a compressed timeframe alongside ongoing construction works. Agile and inspired management overcame the challenges of constantly changing work schedules and staffing requirements while staff maintained technical precision despite working in a zone subject to dust, dirt and floods, with no LTI or MTI.

Nilsen has also been awarded the lead installation role for the next stage of M2.

“I am proud that Nilsen has been recognised for this project. NEXTDC M2 is a showpiece of Victorian infrastructure, surpassing all industry standards for security, performance, reliability, resiliency and energy efficiency. This award will further strengthen our relationship with NEXTDC as we work together on the next stages of what will become Australia’s largest Tier IV data centre.”

The Austin project is a testament to Nilsen’s outstanding skills as a tier one contractor. The scope of works was completed three months ahead of schedule, which produced large cost and time savings and a much-improved profit. Working in a live environment, Nilsen solved a diverse array of technical challenges: a long and complex cable pull completed with several innovations; a dangerous problem in the blocking scheme of the SEPAM relays; paralleling of generators; and bus-tying of switchboards to create an MEN link that made the neutral not live. No injuries were recorded in 40,000 hours of work.

“Nilsen is honoured to be recognised for this exceptional project. Working in the live environment of the Austin Hospital was a great responsibility, where everything we did was geared towards ensuring that the complex never lost electrical power because of our work. This project has demonstrated the outstanding technical skills, collaborative skills, planning expertise and innovation that Nilsen brings to every project it works on.”
