Case Study

Stockland Shopping Centre Redevelopment Townsville

The redevelopment of the Stockland Nathan Plaza began in mid-2010 with Nilsen awarded the Electrical Services package for the project. As a fully operational shopping centre, this meant the entire project was done in four stages with nine separable portions over a two-year period.

The first stage of the redevelopment opened in October 2011 and included a new 4,200m² latest-concept Woolworths supermarket with 17 specialty shops and three levels of Carpark. Stage 2 included a 750-seat food court and specialty shops, while Stage 3 incorporated the link malls. A new 2-level 12,000m² MYER Store made up the final stage of this vast project, handed over in November 2012.

The Electrical Services required demolition of redundant services while carefully relocating existing services to keep the centre operational. Other key factors of Nilsen’s scope included:

  • 72 x Temporary Power Boards
  • 2,400km of Cable
  • 6 x Transformers and New Main Switchboards
  • 6 x 2500amp Incoming Supplies to New Main Switchboards
  • 4 Major Cutovers (1 per Stage) requiring the relocation of Submains with 2 x 1200kva Generators required to keep the existing centre operational.

Not only did Nilsen expand their knowledge and experience within the Commercial sector, the team further developed their staging and planning techniques which were crucial in the execution of this complex project.
