Nilsen Contracting Division awarded Melbourne Airport - Energy Centre

July 2014
Nilsen Contracting Division awarded Melbourne Airport Energy Centre

Melbourne Airport is to spend in excess of $1.5 Billion over the next 4-5 years with doubling of the size of the existing airport with new terminals (domestic & freight), expansion to the International Terminal, runways (3 & 4), hotels, multi deck carparks, roadways and general infrastructure. To support this massive expansion and the hardening of the power reticulation, a new Energy Centre needs to be built.

Nilsen successfully partnered with TFS Engineering for the Design and Construction of the Energy Centre and is the first of many packages to be awarded by Melbourne Airport associated with the expansion. Nilsen will carry out all electrical works (both 22kV and 415V), communications, instrumentation, controls and assist with the associated design.

Technical details associated with scope:

  • 1 x 22kV additional feeder from the Utility 66KV Supply
  • 4 x 22kV Internal Supplies redirected
  • 31 x Tiers 22kV SF6 Fixed switchgear
  • 34 x Tiers 415V MCC’s
  • 8 x PLC Panels
  • 6 x 2mW Gas fired Tri-generation Units (TFS Supply)

The configuration is set-up so that the Tri-generation will deliver 100% of the airports essential power requirements, with the Utility supplies being the back-up.
