This project is almost entirely a mission system upgrade, with some supporting defence network upgrades. (DSN, DESN, DPN, DVN).

The Electrical and Communications works undertaken by Nilsen (SA) were located at the Woomera Range located 500kms North of Adelaide. Project Commencement was December 2017 with Completion achieved October 2019.

Minister for Defence Industry the Hon Christopher Pyne MP officially launched the next generation technologies fund on March 16, 2017 at the University of Adelaide. The $730 million fund is a ten year program managed by Defence Science and Technology Group encouraging research and development by Australian Industry and Academia into innovation and cutting edge technologies for the Australian Defence Force.

Communications

The communications scope of work over the various sites and locations within the range, incorporating remote sites, included the following works:

  • 65km’s of Long Range Ploughed Fibre including 400+ GPS recorded route markers
  • 42 Internal or External Rack Enclosures, including remote Pilbara’s
  • 14.5km of Infrastructure, and Building Fibre
  • 270+ MUTO’s
  • 9.6km of Infrastructure, and Building Copper
  • 100+ Fobots
  • 6.2km of in-ground communications conduit
  • 6000+ Roto Seals
  • 3km of clear conduit
  • 800+m of basket and secure ducting, including sub-floor mounting
  • 8800 Fusion Splices.

Electrical

The Electrical scope of work over the various sites and locations within the range, incorporating remote sites, included the following works:

  • 21km of Copper Submain and Sub-circuit cables
  • 4.5km of buried earth cable
  • 400+ Exothermic Weld’s
  • 100+ Static Earth Connection/Test Points
  • 300m of in-ground HV Cable Direct Buried
  • 1.3km of in-ground conduit
  • 369 Light Fittings
  • 440 Isolators and GPO’s
  • 1 Remote Solar Farm
  • 1 Remote Battery Bank (hybrid power capable). Installed within an equipment building installed by Nilsen
  • Remote navigation lighting to two 40m towers, with UPS back up
  • 80 Static Transfer Switches
  • Building lightning protection
  • 5km of Catenary Wire
  • 700+m of basket/tray, including sub-floor mounting
  • 3 High Voltage Kiosk Transformers
  • 2 Mobile Generator Link Boxes
  • 4 Main Switchboards
  • 15 Distribution Boards
  • 1 LEG Switchboard
  • 1 Load Bank
  • 1 120KVA UPS.
