Safety is the focus of all activities we undertake as a service provider. All organisations have an obligation to ensure the safety of workers is at the forefront of their thinking.
Nilsen Engineering Services Qld have worked collaboratively with the client and OEM to provide a retrofit solution of the Tower 2 MCC main switch from a combined fuse switch to a modern Terasaki TemPower 2 air circuit breaker. An arc flash detection system was installed within the MCC. An arc fault event occurring in the MCC will now cause a trip significantly faster than a standard trip unit reducing risk of damage to the MCC during a fault situation.

An NHP ArcLogix system was installed which allows remote operation of the switchgear external to the switchroom making operation much safer for maintenance personnel. The ‘Maintainence Mode’ feature allows operators to activate this mode prior to entering the switchroom reducing the instantaneous overcurrent setting to further lower risk against arc flash whilst working in the vicinity of the MCC.
Other features include ambient and contact temperature, operation history, status, settings visibile from the external HMI panel which has also been integrated into the plant’s existing distributed control system (DCS).
This was the first NHP ArcLogix system installed in Queensland.
The project required significant collaboration between all parties. Nilsen Qld completed the arc flash assessment for this MCC and developed a detailed solution demonstrating our capacity to deliver turnkey engineered solutions to our clients. This solution will now be rolled out throughout this site.
