Due to its extensive industry expertise and technical capability, Nilsen QLD was awarded the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane project, delivering the design and installation of a comprehensive communications infrastructure.
The scope included a dual-redundant fibre backbone comprising 26,628 fibre cores, incorporating MPO connectivity and plug-and-play cassette technology. This solution reduced fibre termination labour while delivering a high-performance, low-loss network with improved installation efficiency, reliability, and quality.
The project also included the coordination, design and installation of 9,220 shielded Category 6A outlets. This Cat 6A infrastructure supported Power over Ethernet (PoE) devices, including wireless access points, CCTV cameras, and other network-connected building systems.

A significant value engineering and sustainability initiative addressed the high-density gaming floor requirements of approximately 24,000 outlets across five levels. Nilsen implemented an innovative optical fibre horizontal structured cabling system as an alternative to traditional copper. Multiple 12-core single-mode fibre cables connected gaming communications rooms to each gaming grid, with fibres extended transmission capability enabling the consolidation of floor distributors into two central communications rooms. This increased usable floor space, reduced HVAC demand, and delivered a major sustainability benefit.
The fibre solution reduced cabling volume by approximately 90%, utilising 6,854 kg of fibre compared with 65,427 kg of copper, while reducing embodied carbon emissions by an estimated 176 tonnes of CO2. The solution also provided increased bandwidth capacity, improved network performance, enhanced flexibility, and long-term support for evolving gaming and building technologies.
Quality outcomes were achieved through structured planning, detailed documentation, installation run sheets, and regular stakeholder engagement. Tracking software, daily reviews, and Fluke LinkWare Live testing ensured installation progress, commissioning, and test results were accurately monitored and documented, supporting a smooth project handover.

Strong coordination practices were critical to delivery success. Daily pre-start meetings aligned teams on activities, safety, and hazards, while weekly coordination meetings addressed project, environmental, and service requirements. Effective planning and subcontractor management enabled the team to adapt to design changes while maintaining quality, safety, and programme objectives.
Through technical excellence, innovation, and a collaborative project approach, Nilsen Queensland developed strong relationships with clients, consultants, suppliers, and stakeholders.
The successful delivery of this complex communications infrastructure project reinforced the Nilsen brand and its reputation as one of Queensland’s leading electrical and communications contractors.
