As a ‘smart city’ aiming to be the world’s first carbon neutral city, Adelaide is introducing new technologies to accommodate Electric Vehicles. Nilsen completed the electrical installation of the smart off-street parking systems at four locations in Adelaide CBD, which monitor and match Electric Vehicle Parking space availability to actual demand. Nilsen’s smart energy management of Electric Vehicle Chargers ensures the customers’ reticulation is protected from the increased electrical supply demand stress Electric Vehicles pose. Nilsen were also involved in the design and development of an Australian based PayWave payment system and billing platform utilised on the innovative project.
Specifically, Nilsen’s scope on the project included (but was not limited to):
- Design development to meet customer brief
- Research and source of specialist sub-contractors where specific deliverables were required
- Design manufacture and installation of switchboards to meet site limitations
- Design and installation of cable systems and sizes
- Installation of Electric Vehicle Chargers
- Management of Parking systems and parking demand management system
- Management of Electric Vehicle power demand to ensure compliance with customer retailer agreed supply demand
The greatest accomplishment for the Nilsen business was delivering a fully operational system that not only met but exceeded our customers overall expectations. The City of Adelaide has showcased the project to other Local Government business units across Australia who are now investing in Electric Vehicle charger infrastructure.
The project was nominated for the 2019 National Electrical and Communication Association (NECA) Awards for Best Industrial Small Project and Best Energy Efficiency project.
